My mission is to bring to light all the hidden treasures of the local taste
and present them to those who are willing to engage in this kind of experience.
Ioannina is a destination for all seasons. A centuries old city by a beautiful lake, a city in myth and legend, a place where you can taste history, tradition and marvellous local cuisine. Situated in a ring of high mountains by the exceptional beaches of the Ionian Sea, offers a wide variety of activities that take place during the whole year.
So, are you interested in experiencing a trip to history and tradition, accompanied by one of the most experienced guides, and tasting home cooked local plates at the same time? Join our carefully structured journey to Ioannina and Zagori that includes a bit of everything.
Let’s start with meeting your host. Your host, Nikos, has studied History and Archaeology and owns a Masters Degree in Folklore Studies. He is very well acquainted with the history of the place, while he also specializes in the field of culinary tradition.
Your experience includes a visit to the Municipal Museum and to the Silversmith Museum.
The Municipal Ethnographic Museum of Ioannina is housed in the Mosque of Ali Pasha, in the Ioannina Castle since 1933. It has a permanent exhibition where you can see traditional decorative items, jewellery, textiles, weapons, special pieces of furniture, personal objects that belonged to historical personalities and historical photographs from the liberation of the city.
The Silversmith Museum is housed in the Castle of Ioannina and more specifically in Its Kale. It is a thematic museum, as it concerns the technology of silversmithing during the pre-industrial period. Just one visit will travel you back in time where you can feel the beauty and elegance of the jewellery and listen to the sound and secrets of the old art of silversmiths.
But that’s not all. Last but not least your experience includes embark on a ship that will lead you to the unique beauty of the lake Pamvotida. A simple boat trip will turn into something magical with breath-taking views. The lake surface and the sky seem to be one and undivided while the reflection of the surrounding mountains in the lake create an amazing scenery. Something you do not get to live everyday!
Our journey ends up in Zagori and here is where your culinary experience begins.
Lunch is served in a small and well-decorated restaurant that belongs to a local family. If weather conditions permit your traditional home-cooked meal, prepared with organically grown products from the owner’s private garden, can be served under the oak tree of the picturesque village square. In addition to that, you may have the chance to wander in the mountain slopes, gathering herbs and spices as well as wild mushrooms for your plate. If you are a meat lover, you will experience a slow cooked delicious meat, seasoned with local spices and herbs from the garden.
You will couple your delicious meal with exquisite local wine or strong tsipouro. Zitsa and Metsovo have put Ioannina proudly on the winemaking map. One of the most famous is a semi – sweet rose wine with a unique spicy flavour. Tsipouro on the other hand, due to its strong flavour and digestive properties, can pleasantly close your lunch and move your experience into a different level.
